My sister, rodin, actually helped me with it and we had a grand time staging a shoe crossing event as the reason for obstructing the 11-foot entrance to the alley for 11 minutes. The funny thing was that nobody really asked us what we were doing. Cars would arrive to try to turn into the alley, but upon seeing the caution tape they would just continue along (without questioning why we were there or what we were doing). We had such a great time that we decided to commemorate it with a special plaque made of reflective letters and duct tape --

que interesante! No quiero que pienses que conozco Lima muy bien - pasé solamente dos días allí viajando hasta Cuzco. Lo que me impressionó mucho fue las precauciones y seguridades en las vecindades más ricas -- paseamos un poco allá porque hay un amigo de mi familia que nos invitó a almorzar y ví paredes muy grandes, alambre de púas (barbed wire se dice así?), y todas maneras de protegerse contra no sé quien. Fue muy interesante.
No me ubico con los nombres de las avenidas -- hay un mapa en el internet que me puedas mostrar?
Me interesa lo que dices sobre "la indiferencia" -- a mí me interesa mucho los espacios que la gente trata así - espacios olvidados, sin función social o económico, sin valor aestetico. Para mí es muy interesante que estos espacios existen pero no los notamos. mientras tanto, hay espacios "priviligidos" que notamos, damos nuestra tiempo y atención. Por ejemplo, en mi proyecto ¨public alley 818¨ - http://www.ikatun.com/k/publicalley818/ - este callejón es directamente detrás de mi apartamento. El frente de los edificos la gente se cuida muchissimo - hay jardines pequeñitos, flores, decoraciones estacionales, etc. Pero nadie se cuida el callejón, nadie lo decora, nadie pase allí para divitirse o relajarse.
Porque la gente no lo vee, es casi como no existe...es como el callejón está invisible.
Pero! But! Si la gente lo ignora, hay muchas cosas que puede pasar. Si es invisible, no tenemos que jugar con las reglas que applican en otros lugares. Hay más potencial para creer dramas, narrativos pequenitos, casi invisibles ellos mismos pero que se escapen hacía la atención de la gente, que sutilmente atraen atención del frente (visible) hasta el atrás (invisible) pero solamente un poco y durante unos momentos cortos. El proyecto en el callejón es un poco una investigación de este fenomeno de invisible-visible-escapes (leaks between the visible and invisible) -- que es el más pequeño proyecto o intervención que puedo hacer para que alguien (cualquiera) se nota una diferencia. Todavía no sé si estoy interesada en cambiar atitudes hacía el callejón. Hace un mes más o menos que lo estoy haciendo, así que vamos a ver como cambia.

Te mando también unas fotos del más recien proyecto que hicé en el callejón - un evento de duración 11 minutos en que 15 pares de zapatos crucieron la entrada del callejón. Fue basada en la instrucción por Christina Ray de Nueva York: "obstruct one point of access to the alley for the number of minutes equal to the width [in feet] of the alley". Voy a poner estas fotos en el sitio hoy o manana.

Bueno, sí contamos con autorización de la Biblioteca Nacional para hacer
este proyecto. De hecho el proyecto tiene como uno de sus objetivos
primarios refrescar la conciencia crítica de los individuos hacia su ciudad.
El laboratorio no trata de ser una práctica de invasión squat. Nuestros
fines primarios no tratan de ser políticos o menos aún panfletarios de
"guerrilla". Nuestra invasión tiene por objetivo una inmersión con fines
netamente metodológicos de relaciones humanas y trabajo colectivo. Es una propuesta de determinación temporal de un espacio suspendido,
indeterminado, que fue diseñado para un uso que al parecer no va a ser
concretado en muchos años.
Me parece muy interesante que conozcas lima, y de una forma ya conoces más o
menos de lo que estoy hablando. La indiferencia ante estos lugares es
impresionante, a pesar de que muchos peruanos tienen esa filosofía del
"invasor" y el "autoconstructor" (selfconstructor).
No sé si te ubiques, el edificio queda en el cruce de las avenidas Javier
Prado y Aviación, te mando unas fotos del espacio y de nosotros. Me gustaría que me hables más de tu proyecto, más o menos que es lo que
tienen en mente y si es que podría haber alguna clase de conexión entre
ambas realidades.

Thanks! The alley is close to where I live -- it's actually my backyard -- the door to my studio opens up onto the alley and it's where my car is parked. I've always wanted to do work back there because it was so overlooked in contrast to the carefully manicured brownstone fronts of the block (with little gardens, bushes, potted plants, holiday decorations, etc.)
I find it interesting that there is one side of the building that people are concerned with decorating and one side that is not even considered (almost like it is invisible!).
Do you have any pictures of spare room? I'd love to see them. I am really interested in the "everyday" (actually writing a research paper right now on this topic in relation to Ono and some others). I think this stems from an intuition that, right outside our back door (or in our spare room) exists this marvelous potentiality for unexpected futures.

Unfortunately the piece got stopped in the middle because a property owner need to run his "snow-thrower" and was convinced that the thread would ruin it. I had an interesting conversation with him but ended up taking down the piece and winding the thread back along the spool. The snow pebbles, unfortunately, ended up squashed under the snow-thrower.
Ah well -- I think I might actually do another version of this once the snow all melts.

I made up some *invisible* friends (because I don't have real ones - just kidding :) and we all did the bagging it piece and the photo shoot. I lined them up in the snow in the alley right next to the "human" path through the snow. I got some very interesting looks from people who walked by them contemplating these little humanoids.

how goes it?? It seems that collision has been in full swing - i haven't been able to attend any of the events because i'm getting my ass royally kicked by the fiercesome trio of grad school, work, and iKatun. i'm just trying to make it to Christmas without renegging on any deadlines, but it's going to be rough...
in any case, i'm actually writing because i am charged with officially extending an invitation to the collision collective to join the ATBoston consortium -- iKatun is a founding member of a newly formed consortium of non-profit art/technology groups in new england (other members include the Boston Cyberarts Festival, the Art Interactive, turbulence.org, and Mobius). We are called ATBoston (Art, Technology, Boston) and we just submit a grant for our first project which is going to be a new media calendar and place to publish art/technology events in the region.
So far, the group is pretty loose and informal - we meet about once a month for around an hour and a half, touch base on events and catch up on goals. We only started meeting this past Spring so we still have to work out a lot of what ATBoston is going to be about. We'd really like to have the collision collective join in this process with us. Also, from iKatun's standpoint, I think it would be great to have more practicing artists and technologists as part of this group.

how goes it?? It seems that collision has been in full swing - i haven't been able to attend any of the events because i'm getting my ass royally kicked by the fiercesome trio of grad school, work, and iKatun. i'm just trying to make it to Christmas without renegging on any deadlines, but it's going to be rough...
in any case, i'm actually writing because i am charged with officially extending an invitation to the collision collective to join the ATBoston consortium -- iKatun is a founding member of a newly formed consortium of non-profit art/technology groups in new england (other members include the Boston Cyberarts Festival, the Art Interactive, turbulence.org, and Mobius). We are called ATBoston (Art, Technology, Boston) and we just submit a grant for our first project which is going to be a new media calendar and place to publish art/technology events in the region.
So far, the group is pretty loose and informal - we meet about once a month for around an hour and a half, touch base on events and catch up on goals. We only started meeting this past Spring so we still have to work out a lot of what ATBoston is going to be about. We'd really like to have the collision collective join in this process with us. Also, from iKatun's standpoint, I think it would be great to have more practicing artists and technologists as part of this group.

What: A few suggestions on how to liven things up around the office...
Go into MS Word or similar program on co-worker's computer, and add an entry to the AutoCorrect feature. This is a very simple prank guaranteed to send the novice user into a frenzy. Configure the AutoCorrect option to replace the word "the" with the phrase "you suck!". Panic will ensue.
Another gem is to use clear tape to lock the rolling ball in place on the underside of the mouse. The victim will most likely check the connections in the back, reinstall drivers, reboot, etc., before they realize what has happened. Warning: watch out for flying mice.
Prank for the little more tech savvy: do a "Print Screen" of the user's desktop, paste the image from the clipboard to a photo program, and save the image as a bitmap. Then, set the 'snapshot' of their desktop as the actual desktop wallpaper. (You'll have to hide the Windows status bar, and move all their desktop icons into a folder, which you can hide conspicuously in the corner or something.) The user will see their desktop as always, but everything on it will appear to be frozen when they try to click on it...sending them into a rebooting fit.
Or, if you're looking to get your hands dirty with a little physical labor, pop out the 'm' and 'n' keys on someone's keyboard and reverse the two. Any flat tool will work. Just pry it with little pressure and they will easily come right off. Then just sit back and watch the confusion. What a neam trick!
Disclaimer: this will not make you the darling of the tech guy in your office. Be careful of deserved retributions.

One of my most recent projects that you might be interested in is a fluxus/yoko ono-inspired piece called "public alley 818, Boston, MA, USA" in which people send me instruction pieces online and I enact them in the alley behind my house - http://www.ikatun.com/k/publicalley818.
I'm also the co-founder of the iKatun (www.ikatun.com) collective of artists and technologists in Boston, MA.
I am very interested in dialogue regarding women and technology. Being a professional programmer, I have tended to work mostly around male technologists. I'm particularly interested in how one might go about differentiating the work of men and women in technology without falling into easy gender-specific dichotomies (as in "men do xyz and women do zyx").

i am really enjoying starting from the instructions from other people. it's entirely perfect as a way of filtering to the level of structure that i need in order to be able to begin. also i think that the internet is an interesting way to have an audience and not have an audience. i like being accountable to other people for things (otherwise i wind up open and in a vacuum because everything is so much and all so equal to everything else) - so, for example, it's perfect that you give me an assignment to do 14 projects in the alley. then other people give me assignments about that one. so I am thinking about series' of filters - how to set up systems that filter themselves down to a beginning.

we had a splendid time doing this piece, though, as you will see, we made some modifications for logistical reasons and we incorporated some additional texts into the "i hope"s. also, we almost got kicked out of public alley 818 because a property owner thought we might be affiliated with a cult. (i need a good video camera to capture these moments, because they are the high drama of the enactment!) we tried to convince her that we were innocent and she left skeptical.
in any case, please let me know if you have any thoughts on the enactment, feel free to contribute more instruction pieces to the gallery, and please tell anyone else you know who might be interested in contributing to the project.

Thanks so much for listing public alley 818 and for the contributions. I'm going to be doing a few of the instruction pieces today before Boston gets hit with the big snow storm. I'll let you know if I do any of yours!
The photos in "instructions for leaving" are quite beautiful (are they originally digital - they look like prints?).
I'm fascinated with yoko ono and instruction pieces right now -- also interested in the chance operations of john cage, but ono's instruction pieces somehow seem to allow for more freedom of realization. I'm actually writing a research paper on Ono, Cage and two contemporary artists: Rafael Lozano-Hemmer and Giselle Bieguelman - examines their relationship to the "everyday".
In any case, keep me updated of any of your other projects - I'm always interested in talking about things like instructions, rules, operations, walking, urban, public, trash, space, event, space.
