Course Description
This course serves to provide a context for dialogue and exchange for the students enrolled in the Internship Program in Fall 2007. The course will showcase examples of artists whose paying career influences (or is the same as) their art career. Students will be encouraged to think about their internships & the skills they are learning in relationship to their art practice. They will be challenged to articulate what their organization does for the benefit of future SMFA students who might seek to intern at that location. Finally, the course will provide an open forum for discussion about internship experiences, questions and future directions.
Attendance & Policies
Attendance is required.
The policies are simply to come to class, think, participate, do the assignments, and make a dish for the potluck.
Calendar and Events
Tuesday, Sept 25, 2007 - Introduction
Orientation, faculty presentation and semester overview.
Assignment #1 (due Nov 6): A work based on your work. Over the next month, make an artwork that responds to your internship.
Tuesday, Oct 23, 2007 - ArtWork/LifeWork
The intersections between an artist's art-life and their work-life. Catherine presents art-work case studies from a variety of artists whose paying career influences (or is the same as) their studio career and vice versa.
Checking-in & open discussion on internships.
Assignment #2 (due Nov 6): Upload a link from your organization/internship to the del.icio.us/therealworld site (see info above). Write a one-paragraph description of your organization's mission statement in your own words. Translate their mission into language that you think a future SMFA student will find helpful. Include a second paragraph of insights based on your own experience at the internship.
Tuesday, Nov 6, 2007 - Objects from the field
Students present response artworks in relation to the organizations where they work.
Discuss uploaded descriptions on del.icio.us.
Assignment #3 (due Nov 20): Bring in a food dish to next week's meeting that incorporates 3 final questions about your internship INTO THE DISH (how? I don't know - be creative). These questions might address lessons you learned, things that surprised you at the internship, ideas about future directions after this internship or how your art practice may shift as a result of your experience. The questions should be addressed to the rest of the class.
Tuesday, Nov 20, 2007 - Potluck (edible insights ) & future directions
Potluck lunch, discussion and trying to figure out where people put their questions in their food dish.
